The MPD 218 is the MPC's direct descendent. The MPC, on the other hand, remains one of the greatest pieces of musical equipment ever built. Dre, Mark Ronson, and Kanye West all swear by them.Īkai has changed a lot in the previous 30 years, and it's even changed hands several times. The MPC has been used to produce or perform a plethora of hit tunes. There's a reason why most hip hop producers cling to their MPCs. Even in a live scenario, the pads were much easier to tap and play. It also abandoned hard, plastic switches in favor of huge rubber pads. Unlike previous drum machines (such as the E-mu SP1200), the Akai MPC was portable and cheap. This was the first widely used drum machine, ushering in the era of hip hop music.

The original Akai MPC, which was released almost 30 years ago, completely transformed music. Drum machines and Akai Pro are synonymous.
