Ultimately, it's a matter of taste as you say, but for me these things all combined to make the game audio very fatiguing to me. One of the things I noticed immediately when they switched to Miles was that there doesn't seem to be any basic right and left stereo positioning everything just blasts you full volume in both ears no matter where the source originated from.

Lastly, and this doesn't really come out in Youtube clips, but the positional accuracy is far superior with the hardware audio.

You say EAX has a lot of echo, which is true, but at least it sounds natural compared to the mechanical " pwoing pwoing pwoing of the player's footsteps inside the cave. Wiith the Miles system you can actually hear the exact moment it switches over from the cave reverb to the more "airy" outdoor effects, whereas with EAX it transitions smoothly between them, even overlapping a bit. Instead, pay particular attention to the transition between the cave and the outdoor environment. This was done on a Creative X-Fi and I suspect something with the HW layer didn't play well with FRAPS it doesn't sound like that in game. Here's a very brief comparison I did of my own ages ago:ĭisregard how muffled the EAX mode sounds. The current Miles system does a terrible job of emulating those EAX effects, particularly the handling of smooth transitions between environments and reverb.
